  • Cuisine: Indian
  • Course: Snack
  • Prep time: 4hrs
  • Cook time: 30 mins
  • Serves: 25-30 balls

Ingredients:

  • Rice- 1 cup
  • Urad dhall- 1/4 cup
  • Sugar – 1 cup
  • Water – 1 cup
  • Orange color – a pinch
  • Baking soda – 1/4 tsp
  • Oil to deep fry
  1. Soak rice and urad dhall for 4 hrs and grind to smooth batter.
  2. In a bowl add the batter, baking soda and orange color and mix them well.
  3. In a heavy bottomed pan melt the sugar in water and bring to 1/2 string consistency.
  4. Once sugar dissolves turn off and add 1/4 tsp of lemon to it.
  5. This stops the sugar from crystallization.
  6. Heat oil in a pan and start dropping small balls from the batter.
  7. Once the balls come to surface and they are crisp out all side, take them out of oil and transfer immediately to sugar syrup.
  8. Let them soak in syrup for 10-15mins.
  9. Enjoi the thaen mittai.
  10. If you need more sweetness, you can roll each thaen mittai in sugar. This stays good for a week.
