Ashoka Halwa is a famous sweet originating from Tanjavur in Tamil Nadu.They also call it as Thiruvaiyaru Halwa. It is a very delicious dessert. It is always a festive dessert.

Ingredients:

  • Moon dal – 1/2 cup
  • Water – 2 cup
  • Wheat flour – 2 tbsp
  • Sugar – 1 cup
  • Ghee – 1/4th cup + 3 tsp.
  • Cardamom – a pinch cashew and raisins – 1/2 cup
  • Orange Color – a pinch
  1. In a pressure cooker add 1 tsp of ghee and rinsed moong dal.
  2. Roast it until aroma arises. Add 2 cups of water and stir well.
  3. Pressure cook for 4 whistles.
  4. Open the cooker and mash well.
  5. Once cool down grind it to a smooth paste in a blender.
  6. In a pan add 1/4th cup and add wheat flour and mix well.
  7. Roast until aroma arises. Add the moong dal paste and combine well.
  8. Keep stirring in low flame until the paste forms a shiny layer.
  9. Add sugar and stir until it dissolves. Mix well and keep stirring in low flame.
  10. Keep cooking until the halwa thickens.
  11. Add a pinch of orange color if you need. Mix well.
  12. Keep stirring for 30mins until the halwa separates from pan.
  13. In a pan add 1tsp ghee and roast cashews and raisins golden brown.
  14. Add them to halwa and 1 tsp of ghee and mix well.
  15. Serve hot.
  • Notes: You can skip food color if you want natural color.
  • Only when dal is mashed well, it stays smooth when cooked.
  • Wheat flour can be replaced by Maida(all purpose flour)
  • Be generous in adding ghee. The texture would be really good.
  • Once you cool down the ghee will get frosted. So heat a little when u serve.
