Snake Gourd Kootu | Pudalangai Kootu | Kootu Recipes | no onion no garlic kootu |

This is one simple and delicious kootu. Kootu is combination of any vegetable and coconut paste with spices. It also has moong dal and chana dal. It tastes good with chapathi or hot rice. Also can be serves with Sambar as side dish.

Ingredients:

  • Pudalangai/Snakeguard – 3 cups chopped
  • Moong dal – 1/3 cup
  • Chana dal – 2 tbsp
  • Water – 4 cups
  • Turmeric a pinch
  • Coconut – 1 cup
  • Tomato – 1 small
  • Cumin 1tsp + 1 tsp
  • Green chillies – 5
  • Fried gram – 2 tbsp
  • Coconut oil – 2 tbsp
  • Mustard – 1 tsp
  • Urad dal -1/2 tsp
  • Red chillies – 2
  • Hing
  • Curry leaves few
  • Salt as required.
  1. In a pressure cooker add chopped pudalangai/Snake guard.
  2. Add chana dal, moong dal, turmeric and water.
  3. Pressure cook for 4 whistles.
  4. In a blender add tomato, coconut, cumin, green chillies, fried gram and water.
  5. Grind to smooth paste.
  6. In a pan add the cooked pudalangai/snakeguard.
  7. Add grind coconut paste and salt. Mix them well.
  8. Let them cook for 10mins on medium flame.
  9. In a tadka pan, add coconut oil.
  10. Once oil is hot add mustard seeds. Let it splutter.
  11. Add cumin, red chillies, urad dal and curry leaves.
  12. Now to the kootu add the hing and tadka. Mix well.
  13. Turn off the flame.
  14. Serve with rice or chapathi.
  • Note: You can use even chow chow(chayote) or potato or cabbage or pumpkin instead of snakeguard.
